1956 Packard Caribbean
1956 Packard Caribbean Convertible
By the mid 1950’s all of the Detroit manufacturers were putting out on their top end a high-speed sports touring models. Cadillac had the Eldorado and Chrysler had the 300 and Ford had the two-place Thunderbird, but the best of all was the 1956 Packard Caribbean. It was Packard’s last grand stand to try and capture enough of the market place to stay in business and they put all their bets and dollars on the 1956 Packard Caribbean convertible. It was a big car at just under 5,000 pounds but it was being pushed by 374 c.i. V8 engine with a true 310 hp.! Back then the price tag wasn’t chump change it was $5,995.00 and to justify that kind of expense in 1956, Packard even threw on their V8 engine with the two four-barrel carburetors and a push button automatic transmission. The convertible interior feature for the interiors was that the back rest and the seat cushions were reversible. One side of the seat cushions had leather on one side had cloth. The cloth material would be considered more comfortable for hot days. With all this power, Packard even put in a twin traction differential with limited slip.
When you want to talk about rare, take a hard look at the total number of 1956 Packard Caribbean’s that were produced. The number that is generally given out on the Internet is 276. One of the smallest production runs imaginable. The Packard Caribbean’s rode on Packard’s unique torsion ride suspension which would adjust the cars height with an electric motor.
The car has power steering, power brakes, power windows and power seats. Don’t forget to make special notice of some of Packards most unusual features ever. This includes the pushbutton transmission selector on the right side of the steering column. It is not on the dashboard but is very conveniently located as you can see in the picture. Another fantastic feature of the Packard Caribbean convertible are the reversible cushions. You could take the cushions on the front and back out to reverse them to have a different selection of material and color combination. We believe that this is the only American post-war car that ever featured this option. This car is also equipped with the Packard wire wheel hubcaps and has a beautifully fitted convertible top. This car has also won first prizes at car shows.
The Caribbeans were delivered in a tri-color combination which really set off the lines of the car.
