1940 FORD 4-DOOR SEDAN

FRESH OUT OF 27-YEAR STORAGE ON BLOCKS IN LUBBOCK, TEXAS, THIS CAR MAY HAVE HAD THREE LONG-TERM OWNERS. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED ON JULY 25, 1940 IN GORDON, TEXASBY CHARLES C. HAMILTON OF PALO PINTO (RANKIN), TEXAS. (LICENSE FEE IN 1940 WAS $8.10). MR. HAMILTON KEPT THE ORIGINAL LICENSE RECEIPT AND THE RECEIPT FOR EVERY YEAR THEREAFATER THROUGH 1968. ALL THESE RECORDS WILL BECOME THE PROPERTY OF THE BUYER. IN 1968, MR. HAMILTON MAY HAVE SOLD THE CAR TO JAMES E. LONG OF HURST, TEXAS. ALTHOUGH I WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN A MAILING ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER, AND AN EMAIL ADDRESS FOR A JAMES E. LONG, I WAS NOT ABLE TO VERIFY THAT MR. LONG WAS THE ONLY OWNER FROM 1968-1991, WHEN THE OWNERSHIP TRANSFERRED FROM MR. LONG TO MR. GERALD O. HILL, OF LUBBOCK, TEXAS. MR.HILL WAS LISTED AS THE OWNER WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR WITH MR. LONG AS THE PREVIOUS OWNER. DESPITE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO REACH MR. LONG BY PHONE (WHERE I LEFT MESSAGES) AND EMAILS WHICH WENT UNANSWERED, I HAVE NOT RECEIVED AN ANSWER FROM MR. LONG OR HIS HEIRS. THE STATE OF TEXAS MAINTAINS VEHICLE OWNER HISTORY INFORMATION FOR NO MORE THAN TEN YEARS.

TO GET THE CAR RUNNING, I REPLACED THE GAS TANK, CARBURETOR, FUEL PUMP, AND BATTERY. THE ENGINE STARTED UP IMMEDIATELY AND RAN SMOOTHLY. AFTER BLEEDING THE BRAKES I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR ON THE PROPERTY AROUND MY SHOP TO DISCOVER THAT THE CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION WORKED FINE BUT BECAUSE THE BRAKE PEDAL FELT "SPONGY," I DELIVERED THE CAR TO KEITH FOX, A LUBBOCK CAR BUILDER AND RESTORER, WHO REPLACED THE MASTER CYLINDER AND REBUILT ALL FOUR WHEEL CYLINDERS. KEITH COULD FIND NO RUST IN THE CAR BUT DID FIND ONE AREA ON THE LOWER SECION OF THE RIGHT REAR FENDER THAT MAY HAVE BEEN BODY WORKED AT SOME POINT IN THE CAR'S PAST. KEITH BELIEVES THE CARHAS BEENREPAINTED THE FACTORY BLACK COLOR.KEITH BUFFEDTHE PAINT AND ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE GASOLINE STAINS FROM THE FILLLER NECK ON THE LFET REAR FENDER. THERE IS STILL EVIDENCE OF THE STAINS THAT ARE NOT OFFENSIVE TO ME. SOME OF THE GLASS IS BUBBLING BUT NOT CRACKED. WINDOWS ROLL UP EASILY. FACTORY DASH IS COMPLETE, INCLUDING THE RADIO WITH A ROOF MOUNTED ANTENNA. THE ODOMETER READS 60,393, BUT I CANNOT VERIFY THAT AS THE ORIGINAL MILEAGE. COULD BE. GRILLE AND BRIGHT WORK TRIM ARE VERY NICE. CAR STILL HAS WHAT APPEAR TO BE FACTORY WOODEN COVERS FOR THE TOOL STORAGE COMPARTMENTS IN THE TRUNK. SPARE TIRE IS IN PLACE AND HOLDS AIR. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT THE AGE OF THE WIDE WHITEWALL TIRES. I REPLACED THE TUBE IN THE LEFT FRONT BUT ALL THE OTHER TIRES WERE HOLDING AIR. NONE TOUCHED THE GROUND DURING THE 27 YEARS THAT THE CAR WAS ON BLOCKS. NO DISAPPOINTMENTS. BODY IS TIGHT, DOORS LINE UP PROPERLY. THE CAR IS ABOUT AS ORIGINAL AS THEY GET.

EMAIL QUESTIONS ANSWERED PROMPTLY.
