I am sad to sell this lovely car but there are increasingly compelling reasons. I need to downsize the fleet, I only drive it in the summer and rarely then, and the older I get, at 6'5", the harder it is to get in and out of it. I fit, but it takes a bit of coordination to fold up just right. I apologize for the randomness of this description but it is difficult to know how to tell you about my beloved 2cv. I am sure I have forgotten some details so please ask if you don't see something you would like to know about.
This is a genuine weekender not a truckette someone cut windows into. This 2CV was imported from the Netherlands from Bert Pastoor. Originally, according to the number plates and according to a random frenchman who stopped me in a parking lot, it came from the south of France. It then went to Sacramento where it was brought up to speed and I later brought it to Alaska to replace the 2cv sedan I had. From the moment I laid my eyes on this car and bought it from a distance, it has been magical. The previous owner's widow was a very kind and gracious woman who let me stay with her for a few days to get the car ready to head north to Alaska. The trip north was incredible and I had 3000 miles of bonding with this car. Everything about this car makes life perfect and wonderful. It has good car-ma!
This little van is absolutely delightful to drive. It has all the endearing qualities of the 2cv sedan with the added utility of an enclosed box with lots of windows and a removable rear seat. I have slept in the back for a week long trip from Sacramento to Anchorage, carried bikes, boxes, people and dogs galore.
I have kept the van as original as possible. There are two exceptions. The previous owner added a radio and a back up light. I never use the back up light since I drive it in the summer only and in Alaska, summer and dark do not coincide. The little radio works great and uses magnetically attached speakers in the back for decent sound.
The battery is new in the last 6 months.
The car is in excellent condition with no mechanical issues, a strong engine and smooth transmission. The interior is in great shape but truth be told, one of the defrost knobs is missing one of its little ears. Everything else works as it should.
The exterior is good with three paint challenges - there are a couple of cracks in the paint on the right front fender. The area around the hood hinge has chipped and flaking paint and the spare tyre door has rust on the bottom. The good news is that I have a new replacement spare tyre door (it would need to be painted to match - it is black primer now) and the hood hinge area and the fender should be an easy fix. I do have the paint code for the van so matching the color should not be hard. The front vent looks great with no rust there. The chassis is rust free as far as I can see from working on it over the years. The suspension is perfect and nice and soft just like it should be :) This little car does roundabouts like no body's business!
I drive it rarely and maintain it well. I change the oil once a year, lube the suspension "pots" with the recommended castor oil and grease the front drive shafts. I check and adjust the valves every 1000mi. It does have the electronic ignition so there are not points to gap etc. It does not burn any noticeable oil and starts up very quickly (unless it has been sitting all winter in the garage in which case it takes a few cranks to re-prime the pump. It has drum brakes all around and a pull starter - not like a lawn mower, you just pull a lever to engage the starter solenoid. It is 12v and has two (count them!) fuses.
The seats have all their rubber bands and are super comfortable (as all 2CV seats are). The front and rear seats do not match. I suspect the front covers were replaced at some point.
There are no odd noises, vibrations or other untoward things to surprise you.
The floors are in great shape - a weak point on these cars. I have stayed on top of any surface rust and I removed the original rubber mat for the cockpit (but it is included) and replaced it with breathable carpet to prevent any future problems. There is also a big carpet which matches this to go in the back to prevent the floor from getting scratched up.
She will easily at 55 mph with just me and a dog or two but to go faster, you must have a tailwind or be going down hill. Like all 2CV's it is about smelling the roses on the way to your destination. If you like to drive fast, don't buy this lovely car. If you like to savor your journeys and travel in style and comfort, this is your car. If you don't like people and don't like talking to strangers who approach you from every direction, you will need to look elsewhere. This car is a magnet for curious children and adults alike. Every time I drive it, people are slowing to my speed to wave or take pictures and at every fill up (rare at 40+mpg) I get questions about the car.
As an added bonus for the world-traveler in each of us it includes a very comfortable custom-made 4 inch foam mattress which folds up and can be laid out in the back for sleeping. There are also some charming magnetically attached curtains for the back windows (all 6) and a curtain to block off the cab area when taking a snooze or wanting some shade. I slept in there just fine by removing the passenger seat so my feet could hang out there.
I have records for the car from the previous owner and myself. It was titled in CA and now in AK so it is good to go there.I can even connect you to the original US-Based importer if you like.
Finally, I have lots and lots of parts - body, engine, suspension, extra wheels and tyres, and all sorts of bits and bobs. There is a roof rack - pictured, which is an original and appropriate rack for this car but I never had the nerve to drill the holes to mount it. These are included in a buy it now bid but also available separately if you are interested and don't do buy-it-now.
The car is located in Anchorage Alaska and if you are not from here you have two options to get the car. Fly up and drive it back - I would not hesitate to drive this car anywhere. You can sleep in the back and save on lodging and a 5 gal fuel can will double your range (The stock 6 gallon tank will get you 250 miles or so). Or you could have it shipped to you. I can help facilitate this. It will cost about $1000 to have it put on a ship to Tacoma Washington.
