My mother purchased this Corvette “the 60” for over 30 years ago and in that time it has gone between a sparingly driven weekend driver and dust collector. It is the last of her collection of eight Corvettes. In 2000 it received a motor refresh and exterior restoration with 2000 Corvette red/white because it is more vivid than the original paint codes and looks wonderful. The seats were recovered in black leather and the carpet was replaced.
The 60 recently received maintenance to be a driver after sitting for ten years and I have put a few hundred miles on it over the past few months. The recent maintenance included a complete carburetor rebuild, fuel filter, carburetor tune, new front brakes, fluids and miscellaneous items replaced.
The 60 is a comfortable and reliable driver’s car. To the untrained eye it looks bone stock, but is not original under the skin, it drives nicely and looks the part. When driving it you feel George Cooney cool and the 60 gets as many looks, comments and pictures as my modern Lambo. It is an experience every time the car is taken out and it is a blast to drive.
Aside from its good looks, there are some things that need attention (or not):
The radio is disconnected
- It is aftermarket modern radio which looks like original with a 6 disc cd changer in the trunk and Alpine speakers
Heat has not worked for as long as I can remember
Fuel gauge works when it wants to (I fill it up before every drive)
Tachometer is intermittent.
- A new tachometer cable was recently installed and I will continue to adjust it until the gauge works 100% of the time.
Sometime prior to mother purchasing the 60 it was in an accident and there has been a repair to the front right frame rail.
There is rust in the right rear frame cross-member (very common).
In the late 80’s the original engine failed on a road trip and it was replaced with a non solid lifter 283.
Windshield needs new seals.
The engine has had a small oil leak since the 90’s.
The dashboard was changed to black when new (i.e. painted) and is still original.
In the pictures the pedal pad is missing from the clutch. New clutch and brake pedal pads are included. The pad was removed for my driving preference.
